U17 Boys - 9 Players HS State Champs

Nine Players on Boys' U17 Team

Win 5A, 3A State Championships

The Plantation Eagles Soccer Club is proud to annnounce that nine boys on the club's under-17 team won high school state championships at Lockhart Stadium recently. Eight Eagles played for Class 5A champion St. Thomas Aquinas High School and one played for Class 3A champion American Heritage-Plantation High School.

The Raiders on the Eagles' U17 team are stopper/sweeper Wes Byrum, midfielder/defender Jon Degia, goalkeeper Taylor Lorenz, forward Jonathan (J.T.) Thiel, forward/midfielder Brian Velasquez and fullbacks Danny Ellis, Matt Mobley and Barrington Quarrie. Mobley, Quarrie, Thiel and Velasquez were regular starters on the team that finished its season 27-3-1, ranked eighth in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of

America and studentsports.com.

The Patriot on the Eagles' U17 team is midfielder Jeremy Weber. Heritage finished its season 29-0-3, ranked fourth in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

St. Thomas defeated George Jenkins (Lakeland) High School 3-1, winning the school's fifth state championship, the first since 1998. Amazingly, the Raiders' defense -- anchored by the Eagles' Mobley and Quarrie -- gave up only a single goal in the seven-game post-season run to the title.

American Heritage defeated Melbourne Central Catholic 1-0 in double overtime, winning back-to-back titles. The Patriots became Browards second team to win at least two consecutive titles, joining St. Thomas Aquinas, winners of three consecutive championships from 1996 to 1998.

St. Thomas held its annual soccer banquet at Bonaventure Country Club March 22. The coaches named Mobley an MVP on defense and Thiel an  MVP on offense. The pair have played together for the Eagles since under 9s. Both players are high school juniors and will return for another run at a state championship.
