U15 Boys Finalists at Vero Beach Labor Day Challange

The Plantation Eagles U-15 Boys Team had a successful opening tournament in
the 2006/7 season as they made the finals of the Challenge Sports Vero beach
Labor Day Challenge.

Starting off group play against First Coast Soccer KYX from Jacksonville,
the Eagles played a highly entertaining match that resulted in a
disappointing 2-1 loss.  The winning goal was scored in the final 5 minutes
of the match.  The lone Eagles goal was scored by Eduardo Quinteros.  The
final game of Group play was against the East Orange Knights out of Central
Florida. The Eagles suffered a small let down during the game resulting in a
2-0 loss and a 6th place seeding for the quarterfinals.

On Sunday, the Eagles faced off against the Port St. Lucie Mako Sharks.  The
first half ended in with a 1-1 score - the Eagles goal again being scored by
AJ Cardounel.  Just as the team took the field for the second half, the game
was halted due to a thunderstorm resulting in a 3 1/2 hour delay.  The game
resumed and both teams fought hard for the win.  The game ended in a 1-1
draw in regulation and proceeded to extra time.  It was here that the Eagles
offense came alive with Cardounel scoring his second goal of the game and
Quinteros adding an insurance goal and vaulting the team into the
semi-finals.  The semis were a reprise of the entertaining opening game
against First Coast. Relying on the stout defense of Johnny Sessa, Derek
Burkhardsmeier, Eddie Rabionet, and Brenan West, the Eagles withstood a
strong start by First Coast.  Playing opportunistic soccer, the Eagles took
a 1-0 lead late in the first half on a goal by Derick D’Amico.  Playing a
scrappy second half, First Coast was able to tie the game in the 80th
minute.  Playing their second extra time game in 3 hours, the Eagles’
D’Amico was able to put the Eagles ahead at the end enabling them to advance
to the finals against the undefeated, unscored upon Rockledge Steelers.

Facing the first seeded Rockledge Steelers in the finals proved a difficult
task, especially playing much of the game down a man.  The Eagles finally
succumbed 3-0 to the Steelers.  Other members of the team included Sergio
Guzman, Memo Huaman, William Johnson, Charles Junco, Manny Leon, Dominic
Reeves, George Zeitler, Wyatt Zeller, and Rodolfo Rodrigez.
