With six current MLS players and four more drafted on Friday, there are more professional players on the 2007 U.S. U-20 qualifying roster than on any past qualifying roster at this age group. This outstanding group of young players includes: Freddy Adu (Real Salt Lake), Josmer Altidore (N.Y. Red Bulls), Quavas Kirk (L.A. Galaxy), Nathan Sturgis (L.A. Galaxy), Danny Szetela (Columbus Crew) and Tim Ward (Columbus Crew)
When the US MNT Head Coach, Thomas Rongen contacted Eagles DOC John Ramos about the possibility of using Plantation facilities to prepare for the CONCACAF Qualifying Tournament, John quickly put the wheels in motion to make it happen. Thomas and John’s relationship dates back to the mid 80’s when Thomas was a Head Coach for the Plantation Eagles Soccer Club and John was one of his players.
On Thursday, January 11, Plantation hosted a friendly match between the US U-20 MNT and the Canadian U-20 MNT at Central Park. This exciting match provided Plantation soccer players and their families with the opportunity to have an up close and personal view of some of the best young soccer players in the world. The match was won by the US team by a score of 1 – 0.
On Friday, January 12, The US Team held their final training session at Pine Island Park in Plantation before departing for Panama. Following their training session, the US players spent considerable time signing autographs and taking pictures with the Plantation Eagles and PAL recreational soccer players. This was a wonderful experience for all that were able to attend.
Special thanks to the City of Plantation Parks and Recreation Department for preparing for this special event on short notice.
